When is the best time to photograph newborns?

So Best time to photograph newborns? Firstly! Congratulations on your new baby! How wonderful for you and your family. It is such an incredible time bringing a newborn baby home.

The first few weeks in a newborn baby’s life are really amazing. One of the most common things you will hear people say is just how fast a newborn baby grows and just how much their little faces grow and change. It can be hard for new parents to see these changes until they have already taken place. All of a sudden, your little baby has those little chubby cheeks the chubby baby fat on their legs. That typical newborn squishy baby look is starting to disappear.

Newborn Growth

A typical newborn baby has already put on some weight before you even leave the hospital. So, within the first week after they have been born, your newborn baby is already gaining weight and beginning to change.

Once your baby establishes feeding, they are literally a growing machine, gaining weight and changing weekly.

When to capture that newborn goodness

The best time to photograph your newborn baby comes down to two things.

  • When you feel ready – and
  • During the newborn stage – The first 2 to 3 weeks after birth.

When you feel you are ready to venture out. Often my newborn studio is the first place new parents have visited after baby has been born. This is why it is extremely important that my newborn studio is comfortable, calm, relaxing and a beautiful environment for you to visit. It is extremely important that you and your partner feel calm and are not stressed. Newborns will pick up on this feeling and they too will feel relaxed and comfortable.

The newborn stage really does not last for long. It is only the first 2 to 3 weeks until your baby starts to become more awake and alert and aware of their surroundings. They start to stay awake for longer periods during the day also.

What to expect at your newborn session

When you first arrive, I will guide you to my studio. We will sit down and get comfortable. You may need to feed baby immediately or baby will be sleeping in their car seat.

I will go through everything with you. The posing that I do. Your baby’s safety and we will talk about what you are wanting to do with your newborn’s photos.

Once you are feeling comfortable, I will begin the session. My newborn photography sessions are completely baby led, meaning they are the boss and I follow your baby’s lead.

During the session we will often need to take a break for feeding, changing and resettling.
